When Characters Come Alive

I’ve been writing about the life of a clueless teenage girl for two years, having come to know her as well as any real life person. Her story is embedded in my daily rituals and momentary escapes. I even imagine her voice when I’m writing out her dialogue.

So you can imagine how flabbergasted I was when I saw her standing on a train platform I catch daily. She had the same short wind-blown hair, heart-shaped face and big round eyes brimming with naivety. She even stood with the same slumped posture and insecure confidence I always pictured for Neven.

I wanted to see more of her to check the resemblance but quickly realised it would’ve come across as “checking her out” and, quite possibly, freak her out. Eye-balling strangers are still considered  nut-jobs in this day and age.

Instead, I hurried past and made sure there was a safe distance between us. It is creepy to think someone you conjured in your imagination could actually exist in this reality. Honestly, if she did have the same abilities as my fictional character I’m not inclined to test her skill of throwing out fireballs from the palm of her hand. Although, this ability would be ideal when I’m hankering for toasted mash-mellows.

I had a tall cappuccino that morning. Double shots. I never saw the girl afterwards. Every other morning since, a strong cappuccino keeps me grounded.

Next project: no explosions. No skulls. No elipses. No Cats. No coffee.

Wait a minute … what? Just because all those have now turned up in Improbability Theory is no reason to go completely crazy. Read more

Good news! The third act of Beggars Will Ride is developing nicely except for a minor logistical hitch… though moving a body at 3am so that nobody in Pandora’s Edge knows there is a body just might qualify as a major hitch. Still thinking that one out. The bad news is that I haven’t found a title for this act; it needs to follow Wishbone and Wishful Thinking so “Wish” is probably going to creep in, but Third Wish? Feels flat. And flat only works for crepes or cane toads. Looking at the playlist for this project isn’t helping either. Oddly for me, the number of songs decreases as the word count flies.

Let’s see: Burning Down the House, I Want That Man, Hole in the River, Blue (Da Ba De), Goodnight Girl, I Will Survive, Where the Wild Roses Grow, The River … then Edge of Seventeen … and so far, nothing.

But food has become more important! As has coffee and oh, my cup is cold.

sc-avatar“She’s been doing well.”

“With her work and her writing, yes.”

I hate eavesdropping. But as the conversation was about me, I didn’t have the will power or the inclination to walk away and continue my chores.

“What am I missing?”

“Her smile.”

Excerpt:

The phone ringing sort of brought me back to the present. Blinking, I wondered how long I’d been sitting there staring at the wanted poster in front of me without even seeing it. The office door opened, and a familiar, entirely unwelcome scent flowed towards me.

James Wolfe, the living reminder of my failure to keep Jase safe. A mystery I’d had neither the time nor inclination to solve, last seen two months before, when I’d re-opened the office.

Damn him.

Excerpt from The Outcast:

Lubbock, Texas 1958

In the lunchroom, I went through the line and paused, surveying the tables for an empty spot. There was one that no one was sitting at the end of, so I walked towards it. Whispers followed as I passed other tables.

“What is she?”

“My parents are gonna blow when they find out…”

“You see her eyes? Non-human freak.”

“One of those animal people things…”

“Feral…”

Miserable, I sat down and stared at my lunch, which I didn’t really want to eat. I forced myself to though, tuning out the whispers still going on.
