Shadow Connor, the Huntress series
Book 2

Excerpt:
The phone ringing sort of brought me back to the present. Blinking, I wondered how long I’d been sitting there staring at the wanted poster in front of me without even seeing it. The office door opened, and a familiar, entirely unwelcome scent flowed towards me.
James Wolfe, the living reminder of my failure to keep Jase safe. A mystery I’d had neither the time nor inclination to solve, last seen two months before, when I’d re-opened the office.
Damn him.
The phone rang again.
“Want me to get that?” he offered.
“No,” I snapped, not turning to look at him.
“Right. Shadow Connor doesn’t need any help. For a minute, I’d forgotten.”
A growl rose in my throat, a warning, defensive noise. “Fuck off, Wolfe.”
“Charming as ever, I see. I just dropped in to see how you were doing.” He was staring at me, and I didn’t like it. I finally turned to face him, but stayed seated. I felt pretty sure that one of these days, James Wolfe and I were going to end up throwing down on each other. Today, however, was not that day. I had things to do, and I didn’t want my office trashed. The plate glass window had cost a small fortune to replace the last time I’d thrown someone through it.
I studied his face and he looked back, leaning casually on the counter, shoulders hunching slightly forward under his leather jacket. “What d’ya care, Wolfe?”
“Bounty hunter fellowship?” He shrugged. “The fact that we’re both Wolven? Maybe I want to apply for pack membership.”
Sure, and maybe I’ll sprout wings and turn into a pixie. I snorted in answer. “Yeah, right.”
